Raspberries and Heat Domes


It is raspberry season. We have a lot of raspberries. Indeed, raspberries are currently coming out of our ears. 


We also have invasive Japanese beetles swarming the plants. Those beetles also really like our apple trees, which we just had to cover with large white bags, which catch the ever-loving constant howling wind like a sail. Hopefully, we will not break the trees, and save them from the depredations.

Hate these things

 This year, we did get Rainbow Tree Care to come out and spray for the horrible grubs that these things spawn from. Whether that works remains to be seen, as they just did it last week.

You step away from the garden for a minute this time of year - or maybe more like a week - and bam! Things are overgrown and full of weeds.

Destination for out of town time - not the garden.

There is a project underway which will reshape the Steepmeadow we have known. The rotting deck is scheduled for demolition tomorrow. This will have the effect of opening up a bunch of sun drenched yard area. We shall see what happens to that.

We are growing a bumper crop of creeping Charlie. Can't keep up.

But at least we are getting regular salads - succession planting is working - the tomatoes look like they might start producing any moment, the squash & pumpkins and peppers and eggplant all seem to be doing well. Carrots & beets are on the way. The snow peas were less successful than last year, but nevertheless delicious. They seem to be reaching the end of their run, which is O.K. since the pumpkins need to climb the trellis now. 

We're under a heat dome this week with a lot of storms. Summer in Minnesota. Life is pretty good.

And there are a lot of raspberries.

Deploy the Nematodes. Livin' off the Fat of the Land

It is harvest time. One thing the illustration above does not show is the large number of football-sized zucchini that are making their appearance. While I love a purple pole bean, I won't exactly be heartbroken when they slow down. This week's harvest newcomers are tomatoes. We've just pulled in the first few. The vines are laden with many more to come.  This has necessitated some innovations on the "how will we eat all of this" front. Made a double batch of zucchini bread yesterday. Made more refrigerator pickles. Gave away more cucumbers. Vacuum-sealed more pole beans and tossed them in the freezer. It is time consuming. But this is what it is all about. All that work raising the seedlings, the planting, the weeding. Time to reap what was sown. And we are getting some delicious stuff. The weather has been wet, hot, and humid. Martin Luther King Day at Steepmeadow

It's Martin Luther King Day at Steepmeadow. Most of the outdoor work right now consists of processing wood for the wood stove. It is consuming a great deal, and we're just holding the house at 65 degrees. It's classic January. There was a sale at Seed Savers Exchange , so I purchased most of what we will need for the summer's garden. We have pumpkin, bean, and pepper seeds that we saved from last year. So not terribly expensive this year.  We are in the depths of winter, and plagued by ICE. The federal government has invaded Minnesota with their masked Gestapo kidnapping our neighbors off of the streets.  To paraphrase Henry Rollins on misogyny (also true and exacerbated at the moment), I hate white supremacy, and I see it everywhere.  Normally I try to stick to gardening on this platform, but the whole point of self-sufficiency is to be prepared for emergencies.
